Hook On PhonicsSuitable For Ages 4-10 Most people have heard of Hooked on Phonics. This Learn to Read program is an improved version and is a hands-on program that parents can use with their children to actively teach them to read. It uses phonics instruction and a total of 79 books and stories, a number of audio tapes, workbooks, flash cards, and more. These are spread over 5 levels of instruction. This complete course comes with 5 color-coded level boxes, each containing books, a workbook, a cassette tape, and various flash cards. The audio tapes guide kids through songs/chants of the alphabet and through the exercises in the workbooks. At appropriate times, the narrator tells the child to turn the tape off to do exercises or to practice various skills. The flash cards include Helper Word Cards which contain common sight words that don't follow the rules, and therefore are difficult to sound out, as well as Word Play Cards that are used to play games found in the workbooks. The workbooks are colorful, and employ a variety of different activities to keep kids interested. The books are the star of the program, as they should be! Kids will learn that reading is fun and rewarding. The books were created by award-winning authors and illustrators. They're all very interesting to read. In Level 1, for example, there are 14 separate storybooks, the first entitled "Cat" and the fourteenth called "Tick-Tock Gets a Pal". The stories are bright and beautifully illustrated. Depending on your child's skills, you will choose where to begin. Alphabet flashcards are included, along with a cassette tape that helps kids learn the alphabet. Learn To Read: "My daughter was extremely anxious to get started on her special program. The colorful boxes are inviting, and the reward posters motivating as well. Because she is beyond Level 1, I decided to just let her do Level 1 by herself to get her acquainted with the program.
